Mindset is an intriguing topic. We all know that it’s an important part of being happy and successful, whatever we choose to do.
However, there’s a lot of rubbish spoken about it, too – the most obvious one being that the right mindset makes every day a success and that the wrong mindset means you can’t get anything right. This is a distorted view and sets up extreme expectations.
Extreme expectations sell seminars, but they don’t serve you. They can hold you back, so I’m calling BS on them.
Not Right/Wrong
Mindset isn’t a black/white scenario – positive/negative, or right/wrong. Mindset is your orientation to the world, how we see risks, opportunities, and solutions, and it comes in ALL shades and degrees.
That’s why it’s such an exciting thing…change in small increments is possible and can have huge positive ramifications for you in creating a better life.
Understanding mindset can really help us move forward in life.
What Mindset Is
Mindset is our overall disposition to life. If we looked ‘under its hood’, we’d find a complex system of perceptions, attitudes and beliefs that affects what we pay attention to and how we interpret our experiences. It also affects how we decide what to do, and the habits of thinking, feeling, and acting we develop.
Our mindset lets us to face life the way we do, it’s how we see and respond the way we do. And for most of us, keeps us doing life much the same way, year in and year out.
How It Develops
Yes, mindset is an amazing phenomenon. It develops from our upbringing and the beliefs and mores of groups we most closely identify with…it’s also shaped by who we are as individuals. Our personality, personal values, our capacity, our dreams and our free all play a role in making our mindset what it is.
The interesting thing is that while its mostly stable, being self-reinforcing, it can change. People change their mindsets all the time – although it’s not as simple as it might sound, it is within our power to do so.
Mindset Can Change
We can intentionally work on our mindset to make life better for us. Yes, we have the capacity to upgrade our mindset – and see we have more choices in life and in how we respond to the challenges we face. We can break the cycle of negative thinking and modify self-defeating patterns – it’s definitely do-able.
To get started, let’s get real and not regard our present mindset as right or wrong. Today, let’s see where we are at as ok, under improvement.
We can be excited by knowing that our mindset is one of the most powerful tools available and it’s ours to change if we want.
