Frequently Asked Questions

What’s Different About These Sessions?

These sessions are different in two respects. Firstly, you’ll be seen for the whole person you are, not just the problem that prompted your call – as sharp and real as that motivation is. We’ll spend time discussing where you are at, and what’s bothering you. We’ll also explore how you’d like your situation to evolve. Through talking you’ll find a larger perspective and more hope for realising your dreams.

Secondly, by linking to what’s most meaningful to you, you’ll feel energised and inspired. This focus will help you move more easily towards greater fulfilment.

My counselling sessions are built upon sound evidence-based practices to help you achieve the change you are seeking. They are also informed by proven coaching principles.

In our sessions, you’ll have the space and support to peel away the layers to know at a deeper level what you’re seeking, what will truly enrich your life, and your values, personal qualities and resources that will make change possible.

You’ll have the opportunity to re-orient yourself to your true north and set goals that will take you towards the outcome you seek, despite old patterns and challenges.

What Can I Expect from a Session?

You can expect a trained professional who cares about your wellbeing.

You can expect someone who’ll listen carefully.

You can expect confidentiality and privacy.

You can expect to be treated with respect at all times, without judgement nor labels.

You can expect freedom from any ‘contract’. You decide how many sessions are right for you, as well as the timing.

Am I Eligible for a Rebate?

As a registered and committed counsellor complying with the highest professional standards, I choose to run my practice without ties to Medicare or health funds, which means no rebates, sorry. The fee is what you pay.

The good news is that you are not subject to GP pre-approvals, nor is mental health information kept about you by Medicare. And lower overheads keeps costs lower for you too.

If you like simplicity, privacy and not having to wait lengthy periods to fall into government  requirements, you’ll like me.

Who is Kym Madden?

I arrived to Counselling four years ago, after 40+ years of private study into human potential, what motivates us to change, and how we can change.

On a quest to understand fulfillment, I was drawn to philosophy and wisdom teachings, from both the east and west. I was raised Catholic and began studying Buddhism, as well as delving into different branches of psychology.

My early religious bond and white western culture proved a two-edged sword: despite my advantages, I was disconnected from my body, and my feelings. I was conditioned to believe in my deficiencies, pushed myself to meet external standards, and not to see the unity of life.

It’s taken decades to shake off these deep beliefs and limitations. I still get caught up (I’m only human) but now I can free myself much more easily.

For most of my career I was an academic at QUT. I had come to the University to pursue my love of communication. I wanted to understand the power of language to make sense of our experience as humans and build relationships.

I stayed here for almost 20 years, pursuing a Masters with Honours then a PhD in communication. I taught and researched effective communication and counselled all kinds of students juggling priorities and work, study, and family issues.

I realised that I wanted to work more fully with my heart as well as my head, so undertook formal studies with the Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors then training in my specialisations, ACT and SFBT.

My practice reflects all I’ve learned, firsthand, as well as from books. I’ve arrived at a good place, even though I’ve experienced deep sadness, had problems and setbacks, and had to make tough decisions. Life offers us so many transitions and it’s a privilege to be here for you.

Can I See You Without Seeing a GP First?

Yes, you can. No need to be approved for mental health assistance through the health system.

Can I Change my Appointment?Yes, no problem. I’d be grateful if you would contact me as early as possible. A $50 cancellation fee only applies if you cancel within 24 hours or don’t show at all.

I welcome enquiries. Also, your feedback is extremely valuable to me. Feel free to phone me or email anytime.
