Support the Wellness of Your Employees
Is Employer Assisted Counselling (EAP) for you?
If you run an organisation, you know how important your employees are. You need quality work, high productivity, and to keep good people.
The thing is that life gets in the way. Even your most talented and committed workers will sometimes have a lot on their mind Relationship problems. Money worries. Health setbacks. A personal crisis. Difficulties with family members. Big losses for their family.
Apart from personal and family problems, a work situation may prove stressful. They know it needs to be resolved but may feel unsure of what to do or the best timing.
Whatever the source of stress, it builds in a stealthy way, especially if employees don’t talk about it. They may feel they haven’t anywhere to turn. Counselling seems too hard to arrange, or too expensive – if they consider it at all
Stress affects their work, directly and indirectly. A stressed employee takes more sick leave, is more sleep deprived and more distracted. Their ability to be a part of the team, communicate clearly and positively, and solve problems is affected. Mistakes are made. Injuries can occur. These cost organisations a staggering amount.
“ Workplace stress is not just a wellbeing issue; it is a major cost to Australian businesses through lost productivity and compensation. ”Medicare
If stressed employees are not able to bring their A game, what’s an employer to do?
There’s increasing interest in being proactive, and EAPs are being adopted.
In an Employer Assistance Program (EAP), staff members are offered up to 3, 4, 5 or 6 counselling sessions a year, which the employer pays. What’s discussed is strictly private. The program sets clear limits when the program is set up so that costs are under control.
Inevitably only a small percentage of staff make appointments, but everyone enjoys the benefit knowing they can see a counsellor on a confidential basis, if needed, and there are easy steps to do so.
This is a clear message of support for staff wellness.
Counselling is not a panacea, but it does enable employees to get back to their normal selves as quickly as possible, benefiting staff, their families and the organisation.
